Canada to welcome 25000 Syrian refugees end of December
Trudeau also acknowledged that in the USA, among the public and state governors, there is a strong opposition to bringing in Syrian refugees.
It didn’t have to happen that five – count’em – five federal cabinet ministers had to meet the press in Ottawa yesterday afternoon and spin like cartoon Tasmanian devils over how a Liberal campaign promise to re-settle 25,000 government sponsored Syrian refugees in this country had been revised to address the consensus found in half a dozen opinion polls published last week. Canada now expects to bring in at least 10,000 between November 4 and December 31, with a “target” of another 15,000 due by the end of February 2016, and more afterward.
Ben Lobb tells Bayshore Broadcasting News that the Liberals’ math was flawed from the outset, and the plan was unworkable.
The government had originally promised to welcome 25,000 in 2015.
“But there’s no need to rush it, let’s just do it right”, she said, adding that the Syrians Canada is looking at resettling are now in refugee camps, already removed from the violence in their homeland.
Finding places for those refugees to live is “a challenge” he said, given the lack of affordable housing in many Canadian cities. The government said it will spend $678 million Canadian, or US$510 million, over six years on the resettlement effort.
“From a security perspective and from a legal perspective, it makes the process much more robust, comprehensive and reliable”, he said.
“Because when we welcome our newcomer friends with a smile, a smile alone is not sufficient”, said McCallum.
The Canadian prime minister used the rest of his speech to discuss the arrival of 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada in the coming months.
The BBC report seems to simultaneously dispute and confirm CBC’s report, quoting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying he rejected the idea of “exclusions” for single men, while Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Minister John McCallum declared, “We want them to have a roof over their head, and the right support”. Germany saw 758,000 refugees and other migrants arrive between January and October.
“We want these families arriving to be welcomed, not feared, because that’s the way to get the right start in terms of having them become valuable parts of our community and create success”.
Like any other new refugee in Canada, the Syrians will be given health care, language classes and financial assistance from the government.
“Everyone agrees that Canada must do more and must welcome 25,000 refugees”, Trudeau said after meeting with provincial leaders late Monday.
Trudeau’s London trip will also include a sit-down with Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing Street where it’s expected climate change, anti-terrorism measures and the Canada-European Union free trade agreement will be on the agenda.
Full families, vulnerable women and members of the LGBT community will be given priority.
When they arrive in Canada, refugees will temporarily be housed in former military barracks, vacant hospitals or hotels and also with families who have volunteered to sponsor refugees. Yes, you’re probably all thinking I’m quite naïve, but shall we return to World War II…
The new regulations were announced after Sweden said it’s tightening border controls because the refugee situation was getting out of control.
