Canada Will Take In 25000 syrian refugees By Early Next Year
On Tuesday, his Liberal government said Canada would resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year and another 15,000 by the end of February.
Despite Trudeau repeating his pledge to bring more refugees to Canada throughout the federal election campaign, some polls show a majority of Canadians do not agree with his refugee resettlement plan.
The USA plans to take 10,000 over the next year.
McCallum also said Canada would work with Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan to “expedite the process” to get refugees the necessary exit visas. It does include transportation costs for the privately-sponsored refugees; usually, their hosts bear that financial burden.
The BBC report seems to simultaneously dispute and confirm CBC’s report, quoting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying he rejected the idea of “exclusions” for single men, while Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Minister John McCallum declared, “We want them to have a roof over their head, and the right support”.
“This is not about government signing a paper and bringing over refugees, this is a whole of Canada effort”, he said.
McCallum said the decision to give preference to gay, bisexual and transgendered men over heterosexual unaccompanied men in whom the government will sponsor was partly because “they are persecuted intensely” in many Middle Eastern countries. The Conservative government also cut off millions in Canadian funding for the grouping of 54 countries formerly under British rule, waiting out Sri Lanka’s two-year chairmanship.
The move away from refugee resettlement meant many agencies dedicated to the task of helping refugees find housing, jobs, schooling, language classes have cut staff, programs and services for a decade.
“We have to understand that it’s far easier for terrorists to come on tourist visas or business or student visas than as refugees”, he said.
Details of how the refugees will be brought over and where they will be housed are expected to be announced Tuesday.
He said Canada faces a constant debate between those “who would have us retrench, close ranks, build walls” and those who recognize that the country’s strength lies in its multicultural, polyglot nature.
“We will have 25,000 refugees identified by the end of the year, which is a feat unto itself”, Philpott said, adding the government is “delighted” that it will be able to carry out the plan as “quickly as possible”.
Estill says he’s also agreed to post the cash needed to sponsor refugees, which amounts to an estimated $27,000 for each family of four – but he’s downplaying the commitment.
“People really want to help”, said Elizabeth Jones, executive director of the North Shore Multicultural Society, following a meeting about the Syrian refugee crisis attended by about 300 people Monday night. The Red Cross has experience with refugee arrivals and is well-equipped to assist as Canada offers sanctuary to families forced to flee violence and instability.
