Canadian border officials warn Americans to leave the guns at home
They’re our allies and biggest trading partner, separated from us only by the world’s longest undefended border, but Canada is warning American travellers it’s a good idea to leave their guns at home when they head north. Border agents also found a 12-gauge shotgun and pepper spray, which is banned in Canada. “If you are traveling with your firearm you must declare all firearms in your possession when you arrive at the Canadian port of entry”, Upper said.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has launched a firearms awareness campaign reminding United States travelers, coming to Canada, about their northern neighbours’ relatively strict firearms laws.
The Canadian border police announced Monday the launch of a campaign for American tourists discouraging them to go to Canada with their firearms.
Both Do and Chaffin were kicked out of Canada and fined, and their guns were confiscated and then destroyed. The firearm must also be properly stored.
Pratt said studies show that holders of concealed-carry permits are “the safest segment of the US population”. Vehicles may also be subject to seizure (and a penalty that must be paid in order to get it back).
More than 400,000 people cross the Canada-U.S. border every day as part of a trade relationship worth $670 billion a year.
Handguns that are widely legal in the USA are tightly restricted in Canada.
“We welcome our USA neighbours in Canada [and] to make your journey more pleasant, travel light and always keep in mind to declare all goods with you”, the news release says. The resident of Pohenegamook, Quebec, just a stone’s throw from the ME hamlet of Estcourt Station at the northernmost tip of the state, was arrested in October 2002 after he drove across the border to buy gas at a US gas station less than 100 yards away.
He was held in ME jails for 35 days and later pleaded guilty to the felony firearm charge, which is expected to prevent him from being able to set foot in the US ever again.
