Canadian boy calls police on drink driving mother
A woman has been charged after her son called police to report that she was driving under the influence while he was in the vehicle.
Canadian police are hailing a courageous 9-year-old boy for calling 911 on his mother while she was drunk behind the wheel.
The Toronto-area woman has been charged with impaired driving, according to police, who received the emergency call from the child on a cell phone Wednesday afternoon.
There was no voice, but the dispatcher said it sounded like the call came from inside a vehicle. We will respond to these calls promptly as they are considered to be crimes in progress. A boy answered the phone.
When 911 operators called the number back, the boy told them he was in a van with his mom, who had been drinking.
“He’s a hero, absolutely”, York Regional Police Constable Andy Pattenden said on Friday.
Police said the boy sounded scared, and told the dispatcher his name, his age, his approximate location, a description of the van and his address.
“Eventually his mother got on the phone telling police that she just had one drink”, police said. The van was pulled over, and the driver was placed under arrest. As well, the Children’s Aid Society was notified.
Police say impaired driving charges are up about eight percent this year.
The 52-year-old was taken in to the police station for a breathalyzer, where she blew more than twice the legal limit.
The story is making rounds on social media and people are supporting the boy’s decision to call the police.
