Canadian police say they thwarted possible terrorist threat

Mike Cabana, the Deputy Commissioner of Federal Policy with the RCMP, gave the information at a press conference on Thursday afternoon, after Driver was killed during a police confrontation in Strathroy, Ont. on Wednesday evening.

Cabana added that Driver had close connections with a number of high-profile Islamic State jihadists including the group of men alleged to have plotted an ISIS-inspired attack in Australia, as well as Elton Simpson, one of two gunmen who opened fire past year at an event in Texas that featured cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
Amarnath Amarasingam, a researcher at Dalhousie University who studies the paths individuals take towards extremism, said on Twitter that he had received an email from Driver on April 17 that expressed his satisfaction with his life.

“The driver said he started to reverse and heard a bunch of gunshots, and (some yelled) ‘Just get out of the auto and lay on the ground, ‘ ” the owner said.

A witness said that police had told residents of the neighborhood to stay inside their homes.
In Strathroy, a neighbour of Driver’s said he couldn’t recall ever seeing the man around town.
The suspect was identified and the police took actions to ensure the safety of the public, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement. The force released no other information about the nature of the threat.
“We’ve driven him before back and forth to work. I’m positive of that”, Strachan said.
The police operation involving Driver took place Wednesday night in the southern Ontario town of Strathroy, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of Toronto.
Police said they were tipped off by the American authorities at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. “If I fought it, they would have added even more conditions than I’m already under”, Driver told reporters at the time while wearing a black balaclava that covered his mouth.
On Thursday, the TTC’s Brad Ross told CityNews that the transit agency wasn’t informed of a specific location, only that a threat was being investigated.
He said that as a precaution a “vigilance notice” was issued to all staff, encouraging them to speak up if they saw something of concern.
GO spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said the same thing.
Mr. Driver grew up in Ontario but was living in Winnipeg when his Tweeting activities caught the attention of authorities.
Driver – who used the alias Harun Abdurahman – was also allegedly in contact in 2015 with a UK-born youth who was later arrested for an alleged Australian terror plot.
The suspect was under a peace bond due to previous social media support for ISIS.
The last Tailleur heard, he said, Driver was supposed to keep the phone until the end of August and the RCMP would continue to monitor him through December.
“There’s been a number of incidents where law enforcement in Canada has been able to intervene to prevent attacks in the last several years, and I think that’s a reflection of the level of collaboration we have here”, he said.
