DEVILS TAKE THE LEAD: Adam Henrique took advantage of a 4-on-2 break to give the Devils a 1-0 lead at 1:09 of the second period. He just recently returned after missing eight games with the same injury.
Sven Andrighetto and Alex Galchenyuk scored to erase a two-goal deficit in regulation, and they were the only Canadiens to find the net in the shootout.
The game was scoreless after one period but could have been 1-0 Montreal if not for an outstanding save by Schneider. Galchenyuk went to his backhand to score his fifth goal of the season. Plekanec appeared to have a sure goal when Max Pacioretty fed him on the right side, but Plekanec needed a split second to gather the pass and get his shot off.
The Canadiens extended their Atlantic division lead with a victory over the Devils yesterday and continue to hold the league’s most lopsided margin with a nine point cushion on second place Ottawa and can add to that in this one.
SABRES 4, HURRICANES 1: Chad Johnson made 27 saves, Jack Eichel got his eighth goal of the season and Buffalo beat Carolina at home to end a six-game losing streak.
Center Ryan Johansen also scored while goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 25 saves for the Blue Jackets. P.K. Subban, who didn’t have one of his better games, was in the penalty box when Stempniak scored. Condon made the initial save and the puck was under his right pad when Stempniak banged it home.
That gave Schneider enough time to dive over to make the spectacular glove save.
Schneider robbed Plekanec with a diving glove save with 3:32 left in the first period and stopped David Desharnais in close on a rebound a minute later. It was the first point of the season for Elias, who missed the Devils’ first 20 games with a knee injury.
Dustin Tokarski was called up from the St. John’s Ice Caps to act as Condon’s back up. D Greg Pateryn was back in the Canadiens’ lineup after being a healthy scratch against the Rangers, replacing Alexei Emelin…. D Andrei Markov picked up his 400th assist with the Canadiens on Galchenyuk’s goal.
