Canceled flights pile up as major storm threatens Eastern US
U.S. carriers are also amending their schedules, with American Airlines cancelling all flights from Philadelphia, Washington National, Baltimore/Washington and Washington Dulles on Saturday.
NEW YORK (AP) Airlines canceled 2,800 flights Friday to, from or within the USA, as a blizzard swings up the East Coast, according to flight tracking service FlightAware.
The forecasted storm track covers a number of major airports – including those in the Charlotte, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and NY areas. United Airlines announced Friday that it would be suspending all flights in the New York City metro area on Saturday.
United also began canceling flights to the Mid-Atlantic from late Friday afternoon, saying it would halt all service to some airports through Sunday.
JetBlue: The airline has issued a travel alert for 16 airports where passengers can change their flights without a fee or paying the ticket price difference.
Flight cancellations also hit Atlanta’s Hartfield-Jackson airport, though not as hard: 155 flights were reported canceled, there.
One thing that American’s cancellations will help with is delays at other airports.
More than 4600 flights have been canceled nationwide, so far.
“The terminals and the parking lots will remain open, but it’s going to be up to the airlines if they fly or not”, according to Scott Miller, a spokesman for HIA.
American reduced flights Friday evening in Philadelphia, and cancelled all flights on Saturday.
The storm, which has been dubbed Winter Storm Jonas, will reach the New York City area sometime on Saturday.

Customers whose flights are canceled can request a refund or reschedule their travel on aa.com by retrieving their reservation. More than 200,000 travelers could be impacted by the cancellations over the next few days.
