Candlelight vigil marks one month since ‘Baby Doe’ discovery
As Massachusetts State Police continue working to identify the little girl found dead on Deer Island, several girls have been ruled out as being the one called “Baby Doe”.
The Waterville toddler’s father reported her missing on the morning of December 17, 2011.
State Police were pleased with the plans and hoped the vigil will keep Baby Doe on the top of people’s minds.
A vigil was held on Saturday for the girl whose body was found wrapped in a trash bag on Deer Island one month ago.
“It hurts because they had to go right by my house to come here”, said Janice Cappello, a Winthrop resident. It appears the girl’s body had been there for a short period of time, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said.
The girl had no obvious signs of trauma, authorities said, and an autopsy by the state medical examiner’s office did not determine the manner or cause of death. She is believed to have been 4 years old, and had long brown hair and brown eyes. They said the girl was about 3 1/2 feet tall and weighed just over 30 pounds, which was normal for her height, and had pierced ears. “I can not believe anybody would do this to a child”, she said.
State police hope someone will finally come forward to help identify her. Both an anonymous text tipline and a phone hotline have been created for people who may know who she is.
She’s estimated to be 4-years-old, and was found wrapped in a zebra blanket, wearing polka dot leggings.
