Capaldi on Clara Exit: Doctor Who is Never Quite What It Seems
The Executive Producer and Lead Writer of the show, Steven Moffat, rejected the claims and defended the decision stating “I’m not fearing a backlash for scaring kids in a non-harrowing, non-horrifying way is fine as kids love being scared and playing scary things, they love things like Halloween”, and “It is not like children only learn about the realities of people dying from Doctor Who”. “We have an emotionally engaged hero and those women he knows are not like James Bond girls”, he said. “When the Doctor ends a friendship, it tears him apart”, Moffat said. I never quite know how to respond. “A new companion gives us the chance to relaunch the show, and we’ve got a really cool new idea about how to do that”, he added.
Moffat went on to point to the recent exit of Jenna Coleman’s character Clara Oswald as being the type of storyline Doctor Who and its female characters excel at.
As for Moffat, he has no plans to leave the show, after taking over as the head writer in 2010.
A lot of people are saying that Maisie Williams, Ashildr or lately Me, is going to be the next companion, but after the last week’s episode the star of Game of Thrones to take a full time job in the Doctor Who series, would be questionable. They don’t just disappear between movies.
“‘Doctor Who’ does that form of bereavement rather well”.
The internet was slightly stunned to wake up to find startling new pictures of Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi hanging out in Middle Earth’s Hobbiton. It was the lowest viewing figure for a season premiere since Doctor Who returned a decade ago.
Doctor Who continues on BBC One on Saturdays. After running in a teatime timeslot for eight series, the ninth’s premiere was shifted to 7.40pm. The story is the story, but the Doctor is not going to rest. “As we already had his lifecast, [producer] Pete Bennett and I discussed the possibility of making a skull based on Peter’s own face”.
Moffat appeared to agree with Capaldi, calling the BBC’s scheduling “not smart”, adding: “I don’t think 8.25pm is brilliant for Doctor Who”.
