Caps Begin 2015-16 Season with a “Goal Scoring Cycle” Victory
New Jersey Devils defenseman John Moore (2) pushes off Washington… The power play goals for the Caps were scored by forward Marcus Johansson in the third, and by defensemen Matt Niskanen on an open net.
Orpik, Brooks…It was a long time coming, but in his 79 game as a Capital, he recorded his first goal for the club.
Washington and New Jersey would skate to a scoreless second period.
Hynes also made a decision to give backup Kinkaid the start instead of going to Cory Schneider on back-to-back nights to open the season.
Waahington was 2 for 5 on the power play and 2 for 3 on the penalty kill.
With the score tied 2-all, Ovechkin got possession in his own zone, streaked down the ice and eluded defender John Moore by pulling the puck behind his right leg to his backhand side.
Washington grabbed a 2-0 lead after the first-period midway point on Chimera’s goal, a pass that Justin Williams deflected off the stick of the defending Jordin Tootoo, and to Orpik for a one-time wrist shot.
Kincaid made several solid stops, including a sliding pad save on right wing T.J. Oshie, who got in alone while the Devils were making change.
Kinkaid was particularly good during a Caps’ 5-on-3 power play for 1:38 following a Gelinas crosscheck with 5:21 left in the period and a Stempniak hold with 4:59 remaining, making five saves. Washington will begin the season without Nicklas Backstrom, however, as the center recovers from the arthroscopic hip surgery he underwent in May.
Adam Henrique, Eric Gelinas and Mike Cammalleri had goals for New Jersey, which lost for the second time in as many days following its 3-1 defeat at home to Winnipeg. The Capitals were the last team in the Metropolitan Division to play their season opener….
The Devils drew the first power play of the night when Evgeny Kuznetsov was sent off for hooking Jiri Tlusty at 10:24, but the Caps were the team to cash in with a shorthanded goal from Jason Chimera at 12:04.
