Captain Marvel: Three Potential Directors Named
Through an exhaustive search, Marvel Studios has reportedly narrowed the field to three contenders.
According to THR’s report, Marvel Studios is moving onto the next phase of the search. Marvel has determined that they want a female director for their first female-led film.
Marvel has made it a priority to find a female director for Captain Marvel, the studio’s first solo female superhero film.
Captain Marvel is scheduled for a March 8, 2019 theatrical release.
These three names come from a shortlist that at one point also included The Babadook director Jennifer Kent and Kung Fu Panda 2 director Jennifer Yuh. According to the report, Marvel will be giving a treatment and documents to the directors, and they will prepare a detailed presentation for Captain Marvel.
Brie Larson is attached to star as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who gains powers after her DNA becomes fused with an alien after an accident. Guardians of the Galaxy’s Nicole Perlman and Inside Out’s Meg LeFauve wrote the script.
Previously, she worked with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, Marvel regular Jeremy Renner and honorary Kiwi Sean Bean in North Country (2007). Niki Caro, won acclaim for Whale Rider back in 2002 before going on to direct Kevin Costner in Mcfarland, USA.
Glatter has directed a handful of episodes of Homeland, True Blood, Mad Men, The West Wing, Freaks and Geeks, and Twin Peaks, just to name a few.
If Caro does get the job, she’ll be the second Kiwi director to join the box-office dominating Marvel Family.
And last but far from least, we have Lorene Scafaria who-like Taika Waititi before her-comes from a decidedly more indie space, with writing credits on films like Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (which she also directed), The Meddler, and the TV show Children’s Hospital.
