Cardinal fans in Chicago and at Ballpark Village hoping for a victory
Wrigley Field hosted its first Cubs game in 1916, eight years after the team last won the World Series.
The Chicago Cubs, with the longest title drought of any North American sports team at 106 seasons, have defeated St Louis 6-4 to reach Major League Baseball’s National League finals.
But for now, the Cubs will be celebrating all night in Chicago.
“Hopefully this is just a taste of what’s about to come”, Rizzo said.
Anticipation is building in Chicago as many are wondering if the Cubs can beat the Cardinals this afternoon and move on to the National League Championship series.
Chicago will face the victor of the Los Angeles Dodgers-New York Mets matchup.
Indicating how massive today’s game is; in a best of five Division series that is tied up at 1-1, the victor of Game 3 has gone on to win 25 of 32 times – a massive 78 percent win rate.
The Cardinals took a quick 2-0 lead in the first.
In the seventh, Kyle Schwarber added an insurance run with a leadoff solo homer off Siegrist that landed outside right field on Sheffield Ave.
The Cubs grabbed their first lead during a four-run second. With two on and two out after Hammel got Chicago on the board with an RBI single, Baez drilled a first-pitch fastball from Cardinals starter John Lackey into the rightfield seats for his first homer of the playoffs. That kept the inning alive for Javier Baez, who lined Lackey’s first pitch to him into the right field bleachers for an opposite field, three-run home run.
“I will be shocked if they’re not in the World Series or winning it”, Piscotty said. “But you’ve got to know the Cardinals never quit… and they’re going to fight until the last out”. One inning later, Schwarber provided an insurance run with a majestic solo homer to right that went clear out of Wrigley.
“If something happened in this game and we needed a catcher to come in, it would be Yadi and we’d be all right with that”, Matheny said.
Baez finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs. It was also the fifth time in 20 career playoff starts Lackey allowed four or more earned runs.
