Cardinal rule the College Cup
Eventually, Syracuse began to enjoy more possession and started to probe, finding some success along their own right flank with several over-the-top and through balls, and in the 21st minute, some nifty footwork from Syracuse’s Ben Pol lead to a shot that Clemson keeper Andrew Tarbell initially spilled, nearly leading to a rebound goal, but Tarbell recovered well to keep the match scoreless.
Defender Brandon Vincent buried a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
No. 7 Stanford, 17-2-2: The Pac 12 champion Cardinal are playing in their third straight NCAA but are in the finals for only the third time (1998, 2001, 2002).
Jordan Morris – assuming he turns pro after the season as expected – has one match left in his Stanford career. After five successful attempts, Akron looked ready to seal the match, but Epstein came up big to deny New York Red Bulls Academy product Adam Najem. “We showed that today, but we’re also tremendous at the back”.
After no goals were scored in the two semifinal matches on Friday, it took only 90 seconds for the scoreboard to light up on Sunday.
Sparked by two brilliant goals by Jordan Morris, Stanford earned its first national championship in more than 100 years of men’s soccer.
He then bagged another in the 51st minute to put Stanford up 2-0.
“I think that whenever we go out we want to score first”, Morris said.
So College Cup 2015 is upon us, and we’re lucky enough to host it in Kansas City.
Clemson, meanwhile, was unable to find footing in the attack, firing off 11 shots but with just one on goal. “I thought we had some momentum”.
This is the third trip to the national title match for the Clemson men’s soccer program.
The second, Noonan said, was critical.
-College soccer allows players who haven’t played in the game to take penalties, something that happened in both games last night. “As a matter of fact, in our locker room we have a magnet board with a look at the critical factors in the game, and one of the critical factors is scoring the second goal”.
Morris, who wears jersey No. 13, finished the year with 13 goals and both Verso and Corey Baird recorded 13 assists, a fitting ending for a team that doesn’t believe in bad luck. I think we out-possessed them and played all right, but just didn’t create enough chances to win. Morris didn’t score in Stanford’s semifinal win in penalty kicks over Akron – he did score his penalty – but his impact was undeniable in the final.
“Morris, who might skip his senior season and go pro, was content to enjoy an epic college moment on Sunday”. I’ve got these two guys to my right (Casner and Tarbell) to thank for being in the College Cup finals.
Clowes, Fisher and redshirt junior goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell, the team’s three captains, were named to the College Cup All-Tournament team, as selected by members of the media, at the conclusion of the tournament.
“They’ve got nothing to feel sorry about”, Syracuse coach Ian McIntyre said of his team’s performance.
