Cargo Ship Search Called Off
“The ship has gone down, took everybody with it. There’s really no speculation to be made”, said a family member of one of the crew members. It was lost at sea during a hurricane near the Bahamas last week.
The captain had said the ship was listing, or leaning, 15 degrees, but it was unclear whether that was due to the wind or environmental conditions, and what impact this may have had on the propulsion system.
Bella Dinh-Zarr is the vice-chairman of the NTSB. “So, we leave no stone unturned in our investigation and our analysis”.
Chiarello reiterated the company’s sorrow and also support for the affected families is “unwavering, unending and it will never, ever stop”. “I don’t think they have a choice”, said Mary Shevory of Brockton, Massachusetts. I wish we did. “But we will find out what happened”. The ship was considered rugged and had been retrofitted as recently as 2006 but at 40 years old had been at sea double a standard service life.
El Faro was heading from Jacksonville, Fla.to Puerto Rico when it suffered a mechanical problem. It was to sail to San Jose, Puerto Rico. Even Coast Guard engineers and cooks took to ship bridges to don binoculars and night vision goggles to help with the search. It inspected the ship’s hull and other areas.
This decision comes after the Coast Guard lost all contact with the 790-foot cargo ship sometime last Thursday.
“It’s just a dire situation for anybody”.
“Time and money are an important thing” in the shipping industry, Nicoll said. Did pressure to deliver the cargo on time play a role in the captain and company’s decision to press ahead? Bill Brennan, the school’s president, said he had informed the MMA community that “the news we have been anxiously waiting to hear about the crew of the El Faro will not come”. It said it was about 35 nautical miles northeast of the Bahamas. One was the brother of a Coast Guard officer.
“We have lost friends, colleagues and alumni”, he said.
An intensive search over tens of thousands of square miles of ocean turned up one unidentified body in a survival suit as well as large amounts of debris, including a heavily damaged life boat – but no sign of survivors. They haven’t found the ship and the four remaining life rafts or the remaining lifeboats. No other crewmembers had been found, and hopes of survival had dimmed.
Specialized Navy equipment will be used to find the device that turns on when wet and sends out a signal announcing its location. Its batteries can last for a month. The VDR emits pings, but had not been found, she said.
“Our teams are working around the clock to gather information and facts to understand what caused the accident to prevent from happening again”, Barr-Dinh said. The company has defended the decision as a reasoned judgment call based on the experience and calculations of a seasoned captain.
