Carlos Condit May Retire Following UFC 195 Loss
In the night’s main event, UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler put his belt on the line against former interim champion Carlos Condit.
Lawler (27-10, 1 NC) was magnanimous in victory.
Condit said after the fight that he felt the title fight was his “do-or-die” shot at a world title and that the fight could have marked his last octagon appearance. Two judges scored the session for Lawler, while just one awarded it to Condit.
Lawler landed some massive shots in the fifth as they stood toe-to-toe and traded for the final minute or so of the bout. Robbie Lawler has always been an entertaining fighter, but since he’s ascended into the championship picture in the UFC welterweight division, the veteran southpaw has had a penchant for engaging in instant classics and Saturday night was no different.
The UFC’s list of champions underwent a profound upheaval in 2015.
Of course, Condit is never one to coast to a victory, so he to was looking to finish the job in the final five minutes of an incredible war.
“And I respect so much when, you’re in a fight like this and you have to come out, you have to come out in that fifth round and do what Robbie did”.
The two fighters then went back and forth in the succeeding rounds with Lawler even sending Condit to the mat in the second.
I think this fight will play out similar to Lawler’s last encounter (fight of the year performance against Rory MacDonald).
“The basics win fights”, the 33-year-old Lawler said.
Condit, who amazingly accepts the referee’s decisions agreed that it was close and he himself didn’t know if he was leading or not during the fight. “I’m not dejected”, Condit said.
The champion was quick to shine light on his outstanding opponent, who took him to the limit and gave him one of the best fights of his career.
“I’m not going to divulge any secrets but everyone knows what I bring to the table, which is to get in your face and force the fight and we’ll see if Carlos is up to the task”. Lawler immediately offered Condit the opportunity in his first words after retaining the belt.
Poirier executed a flawless game plan, using his quickness and explosive striking to keep Duffy off balance before outwrestling the Irishman. Miocic only needed 54 seconds to dispatch Arlovski, boosting his chance for a title shot against the victor of Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez at UFC 196.
Los Angeles-area featherweight Brian Ortega remained unbeaten with an impressive third-round submission of Brazilian veteran Diego Brandao in a triangle choke.
