Carlos Correa: Wins AL Rookie of the Year
The 21-year-old shortstop from Puerto Rico hit. “We kind of brought ourselves together and learned from one another, and it really made the learning curve a lot easier for us”.
The 21-year-old certainly live up to the hype as he entered the 2015 season as Major League Baseball’s top prospect. “You don’t need to put that pressure on yourself. I definitely exceeded my own expectations”.
“I don’t necessarily think it was anything that really clicked for me”, said Bryant, who worked with hitting coach John Mallee on a drill for keeping his bat in the strike zone longer and cutting down on swings and misses in the zone.
Bryant became the first Cub to win the award since Geovany Soto in 2008.
Interestingly enough, neither Bryant nor Correa began the year on their respective team’s major league roster. Bryant received all 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in Monday’s ballot.
Bryant won this in a landslide, finishing with 150 points to beat out two worthy finalists: San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Duffy (70) and Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang (28). He was followed by Lindor, with 13 firsts, 14 seconds and two thirds for a total of 109 points. 279 with 22 home runs and 68 RBI and was a key contributor to the Astros first post-season berth in a decade. At 21, Correa is just scratching the surface. “Moving on from this season, I think the future’s so bright for this team”.
Correa already has had to overcome his fair share of adversity in his professional career, having suffered a broken ankle in 2014 while playing for the Astros affiliate in Lancaster. “Now we know the atmosphere of playoff baseball”, said Correa, who also made a key error in the pivotal Game 4.
The third baseman becomes the sixth Cub in franchise history to win the honor, and becomes the first unanimous victor in the National League since Craig Kimbrel won unanimously in 2011 with the Atlanta Braves.
Houston gave Correa his debut after making sure he won’t be eligible for arbitration until following the 2018 season.
Bryant was left in the minors at the start of the season, despite showing his prodigious power during an outstanding spring training.
