Carlos Gomez: Trade To Mets Falls Apart
The Mets have been looking for some hitting power to propel their anemic offense, and appeared to find it Wednesday in what would have been a blockbuster trade. Mets starting pitcher Wheeler is recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Ken Rosenthal says the Mets pulled out of the deal when reviewing medical records because of concerns about Gomez’s hip condition.
Now, he will take over a crucial role on a Mets team that entered Wednesday just a game behind the Washington Nationals in the National League East, and 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot.
But then things got really weird: After the trade had been confirmed to reporters (including by a “a high-ranking team executive” who spoke to the Times), the deal fell apart.
The Brewers likely would ask for young controllable pitching.
However, instead of reveling in a bit of good news, the Mets are playing damage control – first and foremost with Flores, who started at shortstop Wednesday and played the last several innings thinking he had been traded, even if his own manager said he didn’t know about it.
Fans at Citi Field responded to Flores’ emotional game, giving him a standing ovation before his at-bat in the seventh inning.
Also, considering that Mets GM Sandy Alderson apologized to Flores, we can clearly see that something was going on.
“I haven’t spoken to anyone but Wilmer, who was sort of at ground zero of this”, Alderson said.
The Brewers have some interesting trade pieces that could be available at the deadline including outfielder Carlos Gomez and closer Francisco Rodriguez.
