‘Carol’ leads 73rd Golden Globe Awards’ nomination pack
The 73rd Golden Globe awards will be held January 10 and hosted by Ricky Gervais.
The nominees for best motion picture director: Todd Haynes, “Carol”; Alejandro G. Inarritu, “The Revenant”; Tom McCarthy, “Spotlight”; George Miller, “Mad Max: Fury Road”; Ridley Scott, “The Martian”. Actor Jeffrey Tambor was nominated in both awards’ Male Actor, Comedy categories, while the show as a whole was nominated for a Best TV Series, Comedy Golden Globe and an Outstanding Ensemble Performance, Comedy SAG Award. It was nominated for best picture, as well as best drama, best original score and Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in it, is one of the Golden Globe nominees for best actor.
There were no nominations this year for such early-touted awards-hopeful films as “Black Mass”, “Macbeth” (Fassbender fans in the HFPA either preferred his “Steve Jobs” performance or haven’t seen his Shakespeare adaptation yet), or “Sicario” (even though it’s one of the year’s biggest indie hits).
– Screenplay: Emma Donoghue, “Room”; Tom McCarthy, Josh Singer, “Spotlight”; Charles Randolph, Adam McKay, “The Big Short”; Aaron Sorkin, “Steve Jobs”; Quentin Tarantino, “The Hateful Eight”. Mark Ruffalo is up for Best Actor in the Comedy Or Musical category, too – for his performance as a husband and father struggling profoundly with bipolar disorder in Infinitely Polar Bear.
From the world of television, six shows – “American Crime”, “Fargo”, “Mr. Robot”, “Outlander”, “Transparent” and “Wolf Hall” – have scored three nominations each.
“To see Mad Max in there in best drama, that proves that a movie that does really well can also do well in the award season”, Karger says.
Jenji Kohan, creator of best TV comedy nominee “Orange Is The New Black”: “Very cool to be recognised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association”.
Denis O’Hare, who portrays Liz Taylor, also expressed his excitement about Gaga’s Golden Globe recognition. But over in the Comedy Or Musical section of the film awards, we’ve got Joy and The Martian squeezed in alongside The Big Short, Spy and Trainwreck. Despite this perceived advantage, 2015 marks the first time in 10 years that the network has not led the Golden Globes nominations race. In fact, for best television series (musical or comedy), only one linear show (HBO’s Veep) was among the nominees.
Also nominated in that category was Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn, a 1950s tale about immigration. – Will Smith on how he discovered his nomination for best actor in a drama film for “Concussion”. Al Pacino (“Danny Collins”), Maggie Smith (“The Lady in the Van”), Lily Tomlin (“Grandma”), Jane Fonda (“Youth”) and Helen Mirren (“Trumbo”) all earned nods. You can predict all 11 TV categories (comedy, drama, movie/limited, supporting) for this event. Elba was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best supporting actor for his role within the film on Thurs.
Alicia Vikander – Nominee for Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama “The Danish Girl” and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture “Ex-Machina”: “I am truly thrilled and grateful to the HFPA for both these wonderful nominations!”
Cartoon fans will probably be miffed that “Minions” was left off the list of Best Animated Feature nominees, apparently in favor of “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
