Just three years after digital platforms plunged into original content television for the first time, Netflix landed a leading eight nominations for its shows and actors, ahead of usually dominant premium cable channel HBO.
Swedish actress Alicia Vikander has been on the rise for a couple of years now.
Don’t cry too much for Ruffalo, however: He picked up a nomination for best actor in a comedy and musical for his performance in Infinitely Polar Bear.
“She’s a performer, so it just translates”, Bassett – who won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical in 1994 for her role pop icon Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It” – told People of Gaga.
Actress Lily Tomlin, who has been making a comeback at age 76, was nominated for best actress in a comedy for “Grace and Frankie”.
And while it continues the long-standing tradition of Golden Globe wackiness, the list also rather bravely reflects the virtually unmeasurable nature of modern television.
Timothy Gray, awards editor at industry magazine Variety, said the nominations reflected the cross-section of films in the running for this year’s prizes.
The acting categories are a safer mix of obvious choices – Emmy winners Viola Davis and Hamm, breakout stars Tariji P. Henson (Empire) and Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) – and celebrations of the underrecognized – Eva Green (Penny Dreadful), Maura Tierney (The Affair) and Rachel Bloom, singing star of the valiant but struggling Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
The Golden Globes will be handed out January 10th on NBC, with Ricky Gervais serving as host.
“I heard the news that I’d been nominated and I freaked out”, she shared.

The others in the category were Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl“) and Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”).
In the race for best comedy or musical film are “The Big Short”, David O. Russell dramedy “Joy”, space blockbuster “The Martian”, zany caper “Spy” and Amy Schumer’s breakout film “Trainwreck”.
The Golden Globes is one of the most prestigious ceremonies on the awards circuit and the nominations have been announced this week.
Mark Rylance, best supporting actor nominee for “Bridge of Spies” and best actor, limited TV series “Wolf Hall”: “I want to thank the members of the HFPA for nominating my work in both “Bridge of Spies” and “Wolf Hall”. Similarly, I loved Hulu’s dark family comedy Casual, but would I have expected to see it alongside Silicon Valley and Veep on HBO, Transparent and Mozart In The Jungle (!!) on Amazon, and Orange Is The New Black on Netflix in the comedy series category?
Also nominated in the best television drama series are “Mr Robot”, “Narcos” and “Outlander”. But this year, what roles qualify as lead or supporting parts is also stirring debate.
