Carolina 5, Detroit 3: Why the Red Wings lost
Nathan McKinnon, Jack Skille and John Mitchell scored to give the Colorado Avalanche a 3-0 win against the Anaheim Ducks, while goals inside the final 90 seconds from Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler gave the Winnipeg Jets a 3-1 success over the Calgary Flames.
“I just needed a few time to think it through”, Cleary said.
After an impressive game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night, the Detroit Red Wings started off very slow for the second time this season against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The shots were 13-5 in favor of the Hurricanes in the first period, with Carolina still having 42 seconds left on a power play, but the Red Wings kept the score 1-0.
The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Johan Franzen on short-term injured reserve Thursday after concussion symptoms reappeared.
The 35-year-old Franzen has a lengthy history of concussions during his now 11-year career in the National Hockey League. “Carolina might not have played well in their other two games, but against us, they are winning puck races and puck battles”. By the end of the period, it was clear that the Red Wings had their act together gaining back a lot of ground to be back in it with twenty minutes of hockey left.
Carolina, though, staved off the pressure and increased the lead to 4-2 on Kris Versteeg’s goal at 6:25, just moments after the Hurricanes had killed off a Detroit power play.
Detroit, though, came back with two quick goals. Sheahan made it 3-2 with his first goal of the season with 4:46 remaining in the second period.
“We just talked about staying aggressive, but in an intelligent fashion”, Carolina coach Bill Peters said.
The fifth goal came when Chris Terry flipped in a puck from behind the Detroit goal line. Should the team move him to LTIR, he cannot take the ice with the club for at least ten games or 24 calendar days, but his cap hit is added to the team in the form of upper-limit “cap relief”; the club can then add salary to the lineup in lieu of the LTIR player’s salary. Ron Hainsey fired a shot through traffic that hit Howard, and Staal snuck the puck around and into the net.
While the Hurricanes rookie forward started the game’s scoring on the undefeated Red Wings (3-1), Faulk and team captain Staal extended it to 3-0 by the 6:15 mark of the second.
Detroit returned the margin back to a pair as Larkin took a shot that was deflected by Teemu Pulkkinen giving the youngster his third on the year. His return date is unknown.
