Carphone Warehouse hack puts 2.4m customers at risk
“It appears that 90,000 of the 2.4 million affected customers may have had their credit card data accessed, though it was encrypted”, he added.
British company Carphone Warehouse was recently attacked by hackers, resulting in the compromise of as much as 2.4 million customers’ information. The personal data of up to 2.4 million customers was compromised – and worse – when a “sophisticated cyberattack” breached IT systems at one of its divisions in the United Kingdom.
Sebastian James, Group Chief Executive of Dixons Carphone, has said the company is “informing anyone that may have been affected” and is putting “in place additional security measures“.
The company said it has now implemented additional I.T. measures to prevent such attacks in the future, and that it has also recruited a cyber security firm to investigate how the breach took place.
Carphone Warehouse has fallen victim to a recent hack in its system, which has exposed customer information and credit card details.
‘We took immediate action to secure these systems and launched an investigation with a leading cyber security firm to determine exactly what data was affected, ‘ the company claimed.
“Armed with the data they already have, attackers are likely to try and trick those affected by the breach into revealing further details, such as account numbers and passwords”, said Thierry Karsenti.
An Ico spokesman said: “We have been made aware of this incident at the Carphone Warehouse and are making enquiries”.
“The company has sent a letter to anyone who may be at risk via email, alerting them to the situation and providing information on what they can do next”, reports The Telegraph. The affected websites were also taken down.
“However, we understand that the personal data of our mobile customers may have been accessed during the attack”.
“It also highlights the lack of consumer confidence in the ability of businesses to store their data securely has taken a huge hit, as some customers are expressing they should have been informed of a huge hack when it was first discussed on Wednesday, not three days later”.
Carphone Warehouse has urged customers to keep tabs on their online accounts and bank statements for any suspicious activity.
