Carson Wentz Named Starter for the Eagles
Just like Flacco, Wentz will have to do a lot of his learning on the fly. Wentz told reporters he found out about his promotion while lying in a cornfield hunting geese.
Carson Wentz will start Week 1 for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Then it became a better morning.
“I’ve bit off the apple”, he said.
Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson announced Monday that rookie quarterback Carson Wentz will start against the Cleveland Browns in the season opener.
But going into Week 1, the Eagles got a chance to get their 2017 and 2018 picks back.
“You’ve got to have the wherewithal to deal with that”, said Jackson, the Browns’ fifth coach since 2010.
All throughout training camp, Pederson and the Eagles had said that Bradford would be the team’s starter and that Wentz would be the third-string passer, behind backup Chase Daniel. It’s something now that we’re prepared to do.
This is a move that doesn’t come without risk.
Wentz knows there will be pressure associated with his role. Instead of backing up a five-year veteran, he’ll be backing up an inexperienced rookie who played at North Dakota State last year. “I didn’t know that, but I could imagine that”. The Colts made the AFC championship game in 2014 but started 2-5 previous year before Luck went down with an injury, and they certainly did not look poised for greatness when the Eagles saw them this preseason. Making matters worse, one of those two home games is Tom Brady’s return from his four-game “Deflategate” suspension and the Patriots QB just may take out some pent-up frustrations against Commissioner Roger Goodell against the Browns. According to ESPN, he’ll be the first rookie quarterback in franchise history to start the first week of the season.
Wentz expected to spend the season on the bench but said he’s felt ready to play all along.
“If I were Chase, I’d be disappointed”, Pederson said. He suffered a hairline fracture after taking a hard hit. But the Eagles have been impressed with everything Wentz has done on and off the field, how his maturity and intelligence have allowed him to digest the playbook. They are going to do what they do and we have to do what we have to do.
“Really the entire staff and everybody feels like this is this kids ready to go”. We’re good to go.
“[Wentz] just said, ‘Let’s go, man”. He’ll still prepare to be the starter, knowing he’s one injury away from being the guy.
Rookie quarterbacks have had success in the National Football League in recent years. The Falcons have won one playoff game since drafting Ryan, and have not had a winning record since 2012.
Whether or not Wentz is truly ready remains to be seen. “Thats the way the game of football is”. “There’s nothing different that I’ve got to do now”.
“I’m going to learn from my mistakes and I’m going to keep getting better and keep putting this team in good situations to win ballgames”. In 2008, the Ravens did not want Joe Flacco to be the starting quarterback at first. “I’m excited for it”. “I feel fully confident that we’ll be able to get the job done”.
