Cartoon: Trump voter wall
“When Mexico sends its people, they are not sending their best”, Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump said during his campaign kick-off speech in June. He’s a villain spewing threats and insults that have filtered down into many a Latino family, to be heard by children gathered by the television or at the dinner table.
Hugo, the 7-year-old son of Mexican immigrants, is too young to fully comprehend what “rapist” means.
Last Tuesday saw the release of a statement by President of Mexico Enrique Nieto confirming the completion of the 200 foot wall demanded by Trump.
It made Hugo “sad” to hear someone call his parents ugly, he said. If she could speak to Trump, she would tell him that he is “unfair”, the news outlet wrote. But after Trump continued to base his presidential campaign on anti-immigrant rhetoric, he could no longer maintain his silence. We’re offended, we’re wounded and we’re angry.
“I’m not a criminal”, Aca said in the video. If they’re going to leave the United States, and create jobs for Mexico, and not the United States. “They are responsible for this problem, and they must help pay to clean it up”. Trump, on the other hand, produces enough boiling hatred in any given minute to fuel several Sith Lords.
If I had enough money to buy several water parks’ worth of puppies, I would be pretty chill. China dumps all their stuff with us.
Irene Huerta, a 24-year-old college student, said that Trump’s resentment towards Mexicans is a sign of insecurity. The important thing is that nobody is talking about demilitarizing police or social security. “How would you feel?” With the bar set this low, I’m impressed every time he goes out in public without intentionally killing something. Not many Latinos in Lynwood will.
Others see a deep insecurity in Trump’s attacks. The program allows certain undocumented immigrants who came to the US as minors to receive two-year work permits and exemption from deportation. “This is where I went to high school. I know I do”. “We’re risking our lives and our health”.
“My brother showed me”, 10-year-old Damaris told me. Monsters are just myth. And you can always make one into a piñata, and beat it until its paper shell breaks and candy falls out. According to a poll this month, three-quarters of Latinos now have a negative view of the New York businessman.
