Castillo, Lamb HR in 10th as Diamondbacks beat Astros 6
The Arizona Diamondbacks look to remain flawless on their road trip when they visit the Houston Astros on Saturday.
Welington Castillo was mad after striking out with a chance to put Arizona ahead in the seventh. First pitch is set for 6:10p.m. CDT. Jeremy Hellickson was tagged for seven runs (six earned) on seven hits including three homers over 3.1 frames with Josh Collmenter giving up two runs in 4.2 innings. “I thought he battled and did the best he could”.
Castillo has three home runs in his last two games after hitting two Wednesday in Seattle.
“I just couldn’t get the ball down, ” Hellickson said. “It’s just disappointing that we didn’t bring our best”. “I left a lot of pitches up over the plate, and I just couldn’t make a big pitch when I needed to”. Playing the shift against left-handed hitting Jake Lamb, Correa made a strong play on a grounder on the right side of second base but his throw was high and pulled Luis Valbuena off the first base bag. We’ll bounce back tomorrow.
“It’s not a secret we’ve got a great team, ” Correa said. It was the first time he allowed two in a single outing since August 25, 2013, for Oakland at Baltimore.
Daniel Hudson (3-3) pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win, and Brad Ziegler got the last three outs for his 18th save. Jason Castro hit his second three-run shot in as many days to give the Astros lead at 3-1 and Carlos Correa played add-on with a solo home run of his own to give Houston a 4-1 lead.
“Getting Feldman into the sixth was a challenge”, said Astros manager A.J. Hinch following the game. “In all aspects of the game, we had a tough time answering them and it cost us the game in a couple different ways”. It was Castro’s second three run blast in as many nights.
The Diamondbacks struck back quickly though as David Peralta reached on a lead-off single and Castillo hit a double into the right-center field gap that was overrun by new Houston acquisition Carlos Gomez.
Peralta’s RBI single in the seventh then tied the score. He finished with three hits, and Tomas and Paul Goldschmidt each had two hits for Arizona.
The loss spoiled the Houston debut of Carlos Gomez, who was acquired by the Astros on Thursday in a trade with Milwaukee. It’s the first time he’s given up three homers this season. “But after that, I feel better”.
Tomas put the Diamondbacks up 1-0 in the second with an RBI single.
Houston right-hander Scott Feldman allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Anderson, on the disabled list since July 19 because of right triceps inflammation, might replace rookie RHP Zack Godley, who will start against the Nationals on Monday.
Rubby De La Rosa, who had allowed one run over his last 15 innings spanning two starts, allowed four runs and eight hits with four strikeouts over six innings. The last pitcher to have at least eight home wins in a season with a plus-5.00 ERA was Jorge De La Rosa, who went 10-6 with a 5.21 ERA at home for Colorado in 2009.
To make room for Gomez on the roster, Houston optioned 1B Jon Singleton to Triple-A Fresno….
The Houston Astros have regrouped nicely to retake first place first from the Angels in the American League West. The Astros picked up a game in the standings with Saturday’s win for their 8th win in eleven contests. The Astros acquired Fiers in the trade with Milwaukee.
