Cathay Pacific flight from Perth to Hong Kong catches fire mid-flight
A Cathay Pacific flight en route from Australia to Hong Kong was diverted to Bali after one of the plane’s engines reportedly caught fire and cut out.
“All the lights went out and I looked to the window and have just seen some flames, and some sparks – the wing and the motor were on fire”.
The cabin was then reported to have gone dark.
However, Cathay Pacific, which has launched a probe into the incident, said there was no engine fire. Despite the defect the plane landed safely and 57 passengers were injured. “Fire services met the aircraft on arrival as a precautionary measure”.
Flight CX170, an Airbus A330, had 254 passengers on board, and 13 crew members.
Some passengers were highly distressed and others tried to calm them down.
This flight from South Africa to Hong Kong was forced to make an emergency landing after birds were sucked into the engine shortly after take-off and damaging it.
“We couldn’t see the flames anymore, so we were hoping it was all good”, he said.
“The passengers are provided with hotel accommodation while we are addressing the issue”, the airline said. Cathay Pacific extended its apologies to passengers for the inconvenience and is investigating the incident. Mr Sirna, who will continue on to New York as planned with the rest of his group of six, took to Facebook to describe his ordeal.
An airline spokeswoman said in response that the airline had received the letter and was engaging directly with the pilots to deal with the matters as the safety of passengers and crew was the airline’s first priority.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau could not confirm the report, while, Cathay Pacific has yet to release a statement.
