Catholic Leaders Appeal for Robust Climate Change Agreement
Divorced and remarried Catholics are unable to receive Communion, nor to teach religion or be godparents.
Yet in Sunday’s sermon, the pope seemed angered by both the defiance of the resisting bishops and the conclusions the synod reached.
Martinez says he gave the film to Pope Francis at the Vatican but isn’t certain the pontiff watched it. “Don’t just hurl doctrine in their general direction”, Archbishop Coleridge said. He dismissed “conspiracy theories” about the synod, and implored bishops to move beyond formulas “encrusted in a language which is archaic or simply incomprehensible”. They asked that God would inspire government leaders gathered in Paris “to listen to and heed the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” and to “protect the attractive earthly garden you have created for us”.
Indeed of all the seven sacraments of the church, marriage and family life is the one that is mostly conditioned by cultural knowledge, traditions, behaviors and symbols.
“It’s exploring that hard but crucial middle ground where we can walk together”.
Archbishop Coleridge wrote a daily blog on Brisbane archdiocese’s website, reporting on the workings of the synod.
It wasn’t clear if Francis meant to raise the issue of broader participation in the synod by letting Janson vote, or if his role was a one-time anomaly.
In that regard, the real achievement of the synod has been the reinvigoration of the synodal process itself, one in which bishops feel free to speak their minds, to disagree with one another, and even to explore the possibility that reform is essential to the church’s evangelical mission.
Yet despite the positive tone with which the group begins its statement, it proceeds to list a series of criticisms of the synod’s final document. We do know that the American bishops are as divided as their brethren from around the world.
It also emphasised how “pastoral accompaniment” involved discerning, on a case-by-case basis, the moral culpability of people not fully living up to the Catholic ideal.
Other synod members took a different view and acknowledged that the paragraph in question was being read differently. “I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery”.
The cardinal told Vatican Insider, a news site, that although St John Paul called for discernment in those cases, “he didn’t mention all that comes after discernment”.
He also urged the Chaldean Catholic bishops in the region “to work tirelessly as builders of unity in all the provinces of Iraq, fostering dialogue and cooperation among all those engaged in public life, and contributing to healing existing divisions while preventing new ones from arising”.
“One noteworthy element in the Synod was its openness to approach families with mercy and compassion since families are already struggling with various temptations”, it said.
Alarms were immediately sounded a year ago, and the final report brought things back into line with the Church’s constant teaching.
The document they produced recognized the “dignity” of gays and lesbians, but it said same-sex unions can’t remotely compare to “God’s design for matrimony and family”. And this weekend we presented a final document that offers our Holy Father Pope Francis a few good solid pastoral perspectives on the issues facing the Church and the family in modern society. Though the church is often wrapped in misconception especially among many non-Catholics, it is worth reexamining a few of the claims of the Catholic Church and understanding them within the broader context of the mandate of the Gospel and the historical nature of human civilization.
He said marriage in the West had become privatised. The Church’s first duty, he said, is “not to hand down condemnations or anathemas, but to proclaim God’s mercy, to call to conversion and to lead all men and women to salvation in the Lord”.
