Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert out 12 to 14 weeks with wrist injury
Griffin said that the injury caused the tendon on inside of his right wrist to become loose and waiting on the injury to heal naturally without any surgery was not an option.
“He’s a really tough guy so he probably didn’t realize it was severe at the time”, Griffin said.
The Cavaliers announced that an MRI on Monday found a ruptured extensor carpi ulnaris sheath in Shumpert’s right wrist. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday.
Veteran guard J.R. Smith, one of the NBAs best talkers, held forth September 30 after the Cavaliers completed their second preseason workout at Cleveland Clinic Courts in Independence. And though it’s certainly not ideal to lose another member of the backcourt rotation while All-Star Irving’s still working his way back from knee surgery, with no evident superpower competition looming in the conference, the Cavs seem like they can afford to scuffle a bit in the early going before turning it on and proving themselves the class of the conference… just like previous year. “He will be there when we most need him”. I’m ready to go.
With Shumpert having to miss a few time Smith will step into the starting lineup meaning that Joe Harris and Richard Jefferson will likely be in line for a few minutes at shooting guard.
Dellavedova is also a possibility at both spots. But it would be a refreshing change of pace if, for once, he could have a healthy supporting cast that would allow him to extend one of the greatest careers we’ve ever seen. The Cavs are listing Shumpert’s timetable for recovery at 12-14 weeks. He battled shoulder and groin injuries, but was a key contributor as Cleveland made it to the National Basketball Association Finals.
Last season, he averaged 4.7 points and 2.8 assists, while playing 19.1 minutes per game.
“Obviously it’s a big blow”. He still will be around long term. You just have to get back in the gym and stay focused.. Parker said he was making progress, and he was encouraged by how practice went.
Meanwhile, the Cavs practiced without power forward Tristan Thompson, who remains in a contract stalemate with the club.
