Cavs, Richard Jefferson agree
Jefferson isn’t a major loss to the Mavs, as he only posted a mere 5.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game during the 2014-15 season. It was only the third time in his 14-year run in the National Basketball Association where Jefferson did not average double figures in points, but he played more than 14 minutes less per game than over the balance of his career.
Already over the salary cap, all additional contracts that the Cavaliers bring on will add to the luxury tax the owner Dan Gilbert will have to pay, which has been obvious that he does not care much about.
A history of shooting.38% beyond the arc should definitely help a Cavs team who had their moments, making baskets this past year’s National Basketball Association playoffs.
After leaving the Nets, Jefferson had stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors and Utah Jazz. This is causing the Cavaliers to decide quickly if they want the player back.
The Cavaliers are reportedly scheduled to meet with swingman J.R. Smith this week, but that doesn’t guarantee the unrestricted free agent will re-sign with the team. Having re-signed LeBron James, Kevin Love with a Tristan Thompson return likely, the Cavaliers will look to return to the National Baskeball Association Finals for a second straight season. The team believed it had reached an agreement with Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan.
The Cavs would like Smith back, but on a modest one-year contract. The 34-year-old shooter is a free agent in the current offseason.
Smith said that other teams have offered what he was looking for – $7-9 million, according to reports – but that his current team offers him the best chance of winning a championship. Apparently he never officially signed the contract, and has had a change of heart.
