Cavs stop for Vegas party on way home to Cleveland
While it’s really hard for those of us non-Cleveland sports fans to totally grasp how big this is, Nike tried its best to put things into perspective with this wonderful commercial about the Cavaliers and, more importantly, the city.
“You give me one game, you give me 48 minutes, I’ll take my chances”, said James, whose consecutive 41-point explosions in Games 5 and 6 helped bring about the winner-take-all finale.
James was voted the unanimous victor of the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award after averaging 29.7 points per game, 11.3 rebounds and 8.9 assists in the best-of-seven championship series.
LeBron James was unanimously selected as the best player in the 2016 NBA Finals. To come back to Cleveland, to bring them a championship, just shows you who he is. James, an Akron, Ohio, native, shouted through tears in a post-game interview with ESPN. That was back on June 20, 2013 when Lebron and the Miami Heat beat the San Antonio Spurs to claim the Florida franchise’s second straight championship.
As Cleveland celebrated in the trophy ceremony, Green returned to the floor to congratulate the Cavs. “It’s going to be the biggest party that Cleveland has ever seen”. No fan base deserves this more. “I’m speechless and proud of everybody”.
LEBRON JAMES CAME home to Cleveland in 2014 with one objective: deliver a championship to a city long devoid of such an accomplishment. Get on my back and I’m going to carry you.
“That moment right there happened, and I was like “ok, I’m fine” ” Irving said.
The Cavs have clearly relished the role of underdog.
Playing his sixth straight finals, James nearly single-handedly carried the Cavs back into this series and finished with 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs gave their city its first major sports victor since the Browns won the National Football League title in 1964. The Warriors, despite boasting two of the NBA’s best shooters Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, did not score in the final four minutes. “Everybody counted us out and that’s when we strived, that’s when I got off”.
Cleveland did it after a coaching change, with Tyronn Lue taking over in January for the fired David Blatt.
It took 7 games to decide the NBA Finals and in the end it was Cleveland who were the ones left standing. The other two teams are the 1951 New York Knicks (against the Rochester Royals) and the 1966 Los Angeles Lakers (against the Boston Celtics).
As the final seconds ticked off on the giant scoreboard inside Quicken Loans Arena, 18,000 fans, some of them strangers when Sunday night began, cried, hugged, screamed and shared a moment many of them have spent a lifetime dreaming of. They groaned when Kevin Love missed an easy layup and agonized when Draymond Green, who has become Public Enemy No. 1, was left unguarded for wide-open 3-pointers throughout the first half. Doesn’t matter how good or bad defense I played.
“I don’t know”, Curry said when asked about the Warriors’ legacy, per Howard-Cooper. I’m at a loss for words. “That’s something that is tough to kind of swallow with the opportunity we had in front of us”. It was the first ejection of his career.
That frustration was evident Sunday night as well.
