CBO: Repeal-only to cost 32 million their health insurance
Murkowski released her own statement, explaining, “I can not vote to proceed to repeal the ACA without reform that allows people the choice they want, the affordability they need, and the quality of care they deserve”.
For people who do care about the human lives affected by health care policy, Trump’s transactional approach can appear very confusing indeed. McConnell now intends to vote on a bill to repeal the ACA with no replacement plan in place – a move Trump supports – which, The New York Times wrote, “has nearly no chance to pass”.
“We have now the plan of the day that’s put in front of us”, Rep. Richard Neal, the ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, said today.
In some important ways, this new bill repeals less of Obamacare than the legislation that passed the House and was under consideration in the Senate until this week.
What’s more, CBO says that under the new Republican plan three-quarters of the United States population would end up living in an area without insurance at all for people buying insurance on their own.
Several senators have made clear that they want GOP leaders to pursue an alternative that would require working with Democrats, who are united against a repeal of Obamacare but say they want to work with Republicans to shore up health insurance markets.
Administration officials are meeting throughout the week to try to find a bill that 50 of the chamber’s 52 Republicans can support.
Just 17 Republican senators expressed their intention to support the bill, 24 were unclear, and 11 have said they are either concerned with the bill or will vote “no” if there aren’t further changes. He added that the Republicans have promised to repeal Obamacare for the past seven years and now is the time.
McConnell has struggled with getting members of his party to come to a consensus on replacement language, with conservatives calling for the bill to be pushed to the right and moderates voicing concerns over rolling back funds for Medicaid expansion.
I did not come to Washington to hurt people.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, which provides nonpartisan analysis of proposed legislation in Congress, the BCRA would remove coverage for 22 million Americans by 2026. “And if it were to pass without any amendment at all, there’s a two-year delay before it kicks in”.
McConnell said Pence, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma would meet with GOP senators on the Hill on Wednesday night.
