CBS hopes new ‘Star Trek’ will draw in streaming viewers
So CBS is going to charge us $5.99 a month to stream the new Star Trek series when it arrives in 2017. CBS Studios global plans to distribute the new series for television and its multiple platforms. Trekkies around the world will be able to catch the series on TV and various platforms thanks to CBS Studios worldwide. The new series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond, to be released in summer 2016.
“Star Trek” is returning to small screen just in time for its 50th anniversary.
The two most recent Star Trek films, Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness (both directed by sci-fi giant J. J. Abrams) grossed almost $258 million and $229 million, respectively, at the global box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
“During the third quarter, we once again grew our profit and EPS while continuing to increase our investment in content and new distribution services”, said Leslie Moonves, the president and CEO of CBS Corporation.
For CBS, the digital TV “space” is increasingly becoming “the final frontier”. He is also an executive producer for CBS series “Scorpion“, “Limitless” and “Hawaii Five-O”.
At the same time, CBS has been spending to create its own “over-the-top” services such as its CBS All Access as well as an Internet-delivered version of its premium channel Showtime, which was introduced in July.
You can’t ask for a better marketing tease than that – and have to believe it’s better than the other way around: teasing a new TV series on, say, Yahoo – only to run the series on CBS. This announcement already has fans debating over the direction of the new show.
It can’t be said that CBS is boldly going where no one has gone before. A few years after, one of the most popular of the television series aired when Jean Luc Picard led his crew across the universe in the NCC-1701-C starship Enterprise in the Star Trek: The Next Generation show.
It’s an interesting move considering Star Trek’s ginormous fan base. If Star Trek Beyond is not a hit, and the new television show not accepted by fans, then Star Trek could once again fade from the mainstream public until the next reboot happens.
“[Star Trek 2017 is a] world-class effort that will make all Star Trek fans proud”.
