CBS says ‘The Good Wife’ will end its run in May
CBS chose Super Bowl 50 to announce the end of its popular drama “The Good Wife”. “Nothing’s off the table”, said Michelle King, adding that the Kings were not ruling out anything “at this point”, including a spinoff series without Good Wife star Julianna Margulies. “The final nine episodes begin next Sunday”, the announcer said in a promo.
The legal drama series airs on Network Ten in Australia and has a very loyal and strong fan base.
Written and produced by an impeccable team, headed by the brilliant Robert and Michelle King, the cast featured an amazingly talented cast headed by Julianna Margulies, Leslie Moonves, David Stapf, Glenn Geller and Nina Tassler. When this season’s storyline detailing the presidential campaign of Alicia’s husband, Peter (Chris Noth), literally petered out, it was clear that “The Good Wife’s” days were numbered.
The show’s co-creators Robert and Michelle King, meanwhile, opened up on Twitter to give their farewell to the many supporters of Alicia Florrick.
Creators say they want to go out at the “top of their creative game”, but many think The Good Wife’s days were numbered after they killed off Josh Charles’ character, Will Gardner.
They saluted CBS for giving them freedom to make The Good Wife just about exactly how they wanted to make it. Tellingly, Robert noted how the creative process is different in broadcast and in cable, which results in the latter’s series winning a glut of awards.
Don’t miss the final episodes of The Good Wife Sundays at 9/8c on CBS. “We couldn’t be more excited and grateful”. He said there are no plans for a time jump and former friend Kalinda (Archie Panjani, who left after frayed relations) and former drug kingpin client Lemond Bishop (Mike Colter, who moved on to Netflix’s “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage”) won’t be back but some other characters will.
It’s clear that conversations with the key players during the past few weeks resulted in a consensus that the show would be best served by ending after the current season.
“The Good Wife” has received 39 Emmy nominations, including two for outstanding drama series.
“The storytelling we have will finish in the seventh year”, Robert King told TVLine last month.
