CC Sabathia: Sabathia not guaranteed spot in rotation
How any of this plays out is a guess at this point.
As baseball’s trade deadline approached this past July, Brian Cashman labeled his top batch of prospects as untouchables. Heyman’s report about Miller is a flawless example.
Girardi said he has spoken to CC Sabathia since his recent alcohol rehab stay. That doesn’t mean anything will get done. The Yankees’ manager would like his own care package with the personnel additions needed to get to where the Mets just went. Look for the Yankees to be in on the bidding for Zobrist.
Pitcher CC Sabathia may not have a large role on the 2016 version of the Yankees – if he has one at all.
Sabathia, Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Pineda, Masahiro Tanaka each made more than 20 starts for the Yankees last season.
And they have a 25-year-old shortstop in Gregorius, and a 24-year-old backup catcher in John Ryan Murphy. It doesn’t say the Yankees are actively shopping Miller, but they will listen. Guys are used to feeling a few things during the course of the season, and they play through it. That’s just the way it is. 261 with 11 home runs and an. However, the Yankees also have star setup man Dellin Betances, who can take over as closer in the event Miller is moved. But that doesn’t mean anything is close. “You just try to balance it the best way you can”. I’m not sure how long the Yankees have been doing this, but I’ve been on the beat since 2009 and it certainly seems like Girardi and David Cone have been there every year. And see the note above about the older players being the most productive.
Cashman said he’s heard from several teams about the availability of the prospects, though he added that he’s had “significant asks going on all over the roster”.
What happens if Bird struggles early or gets hurt, himself? It’s a little like entering 1991 by thinking you can trade Don Mattingly because you have Kevin Maas. “Not for Byrd, but optimally period, that would be the best”. “I can’t throw enough bouquets his way”.
While not specifically addressing reporters questions on Murphy, Cashman made it clear he’s not interested in an offensive second baseman, saying if he addressed the position it wouldn’t be for offensive purposes alone.
Would Murphy fit on the Yankees? His leg had broke (albeit undiagnosed for three weeks), and the 31 home runs and 79 RBI would be all he could contribute to the 2015 season.
Miler, 30, is in the second year of a four-year, $36 million deal he signed last offseason with the Yankees after spending time with both the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles. If they trade Miller, they would have to do so while still addressing their reliever situation.
