Cech’s heroics help Arsenal hold Liverpool to goalless draw in PL clash
Arsenal and Liverpool played out a thrilling goalless draw as the home side’s wait for a first Premier League win at the Emirates this season continues.
Cech, who arrived from Chelsea during the close-season, was at fault for both goals as Arsenal succumbed to a surprise 2-0 opening-day defeat at home to West Ham United before being breached again against Crystal Palace last week. We wanted to get something to keep the run going and I think we can be happy with the way we played.
Arsenal looked a different team after the interval and hit the woodwork on the hour through Alexis Sanchez from the left of the area after he was set up by Olivier Giroud.
“I didn’t ask for an explanation, what does it change?”
“It was in a period of the game when we had the most problems defensively but it is a regular goal, I cant see why it was cancelled – it was clear”.
No Arsenal player demonstrated that sense of vulnerability more than Calum Chambers, who was pressed into action at centre-back alongside Gabriel after Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were ruled out. You see it on the screens, they go off for 20 seconds and they get the decision right in the end. “A few times they went on the counterattack and you need all your players to perform on a night like that”.
Hailing Liverpool FC’s defensive performance, Croatia global Lovren was quoted by the Liverpool FC official website, as saying: “I’d say we’re disappointed [not to have won]”.
Roberto Firmino made his first Liverpool start, with Lucas Leiva and Emre Can also coming into the side as captain Jordan Henderson and fellow midfielder Adam Lallana missed out due to injury and Jordon Ibe dropped to the bench.
We can hardly pass up the opportunity to point out – somewhat smugly – that we thought Liverpool, with their solid defensive record, would secure a 0-0 draw.
“We definitely could have had all three points”, he added.
When all the football pundits were dismissing Arsenal and our chances of winning the Premier League title a couple of years ago, it really wound me up, as we were top of the table and playing the best football. First half in particular we created chances and should have been in front.
Philippe Coutinho hit the crossbar after only two minutes and struck a post with a shot that Petr Cech got a fingertip to at full stretch.
