Bapu known for religious peace and non-violence, was born in Gujarat in 1869 to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. He dedicated his whole life to the service of India and humanity.
President Mukherjee also paid floral tributes to the Mahatma at his memorial.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote: “Gandhi’s birthday 2day”. In the Haripura session of the Congress he pitted Pattabhi Sitaramayiya against his political rival Subhash Chandra Bose, and himself admitted that he’d taken it out personally on Bose.

Indian currency is much synonymous to Mahatma Gandhi, thanks to his landmark picture inscribed on every currency note. His struggles helped us to break the shackles of British rule and become an independent nation. Gandhi, however, was preaching oneness, unity, peaceful reconciliation among religions and ethnicities. And so true it has been since he continued to inspire civil rights and freedom movements across the world. We needed someone like Gandhi.
