Central Station evacuated after fire
The fire on the concourse at Central Railway Station is believed to have started in a fast food restaurant. The main building dates to 1901 and it’s a well-known landmark.
Fire crews at Central Station after a fire broke out at a Hungry Jack’s outlet on Saturday evening. Passengers on platforms one through to 15 were escorted out of danger.
“It was really scary”, said 16-year-old Courtney Waugh.
Courtney was on her way home to Dubbo with her mother Wendy Gilchrist after a marathon day of travelling down from Queensland.
About 1000 people had to be evacuated when the fire spread across four levels via ducting.
The station was evacuated while 40 firefighters brought the blaze under control.
Nearby streets have been blocked off due to the fire.
Fire fighters are at the scene.
Sydney Trains tweeted that delays were expected. No injuries have been reported, at the time of writing, from the incident.
