Centre returns 14 Delhi govt bills, Kejriwal attacks Modi
The Delhi government’s revenue department is likely to anchor the referendum process under the overall guidance of the Urban Development (UD) Department.
“After UK’s referendum on European Union exit, it’s time to have a referendum on full statehood for Delhi,”Kejriwal tweeted”. When we were in government, we followed the Co-nstitution.
“Since Delhi is not a full state and remains a Union Territory, the bill needs to be approved by the Centre before it can be introduced in the Assembly”.
Opposition and legal experts instantly shot down the Delhi CM’s idea by terming it unconstitutional.
“The concept of referendum is alien to our constitutional scheme, Shri”.
Increasing tension between the Delhi government and the Centre, 14 bills sent by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led government a year ago were returned on Friday.
The Home Ministry move comes weeks after President Pranab Mukherjee refused assent to a legislation that sought to protect 21 AAP MLAs, who were appointed parliamentary secretaries, from disqualification for holding office of profit. “They have no intention to clear the bills and are creating hurdles in the functioning of the AAP government”.
But unlike others, he is calling for a referendum – to be held in Delhi on complete statehood to the national capital.
Officials said the government could even use the recently notified mohalla sabhas to conduct the exercise.
“Is Kejriwal intoxicated by the Brexit referendum?”
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also wasted no opportunity in claiming that PM Modi’s foreign policy has been a “completely failure”. “In a democracy the will of the ppl is supreme”, he tweeted.
