CES 2016 To Get Smarter, More Innovative
One highlight is Lenovo’s latest updates to its ThinkPad X1 portfolio.
We will without a doubt see a range of “connected” devices at this year’s show from home utilities through devices to monitor more of our daily behaviour and inform our consumption.
But Blau said the innovations are ‘often evolutionary, not revolutionary’. Expect interesting announcements about electric cars from the likes of Faraday Future, which focuses on the development of intelligent electric vehicles. Two of eight keynote speakers at the show come from vehicle producers: Dr. Herbert Diess, Volkswagen’s head of passenger cars, and General Motors CEO Mary Barra. A large number of products from different manufactures are being talked about.
Facebook Inc.is there through its Occulus subsidiary, and Alphabet (formerly Google Inc.) is expected to be on hand to show off self-driving auto partnerships.
A more recent rumour suggests that LG hasn’t completely scrapped the idea, but is instead focusing on a curved display similar to Samsung’s S6 Edge.
The auto, which is set to be revealed tonight, will be a concept vehicle with a production model set to hit the roads by 2020.
“Sales of 4K TVs are exploding right now”, said NPD analyst Stephen Baker, referring to the high-definition format.
According to The Verge, we can expect from small companies like Alcatel Onetouch, ZTE, and Huawei to showcase their product although, the big smartphone makers like Apple will hold their major announcements for later in the year.
Blau expects the drones on display at the show to be more sophisticated, with easy controls and even applications that let them be operated using smartphones.
They’re going nowhere. Drones are here to stay.
The trend of once-dumb devices getting smarter will continue to include lightbulbs, remote controls, thermostats and other devices in the home as well as “wearables” such as jewelry or clothing.

Samsung and Google-owned Nest are also expected to make moves to be at the center of smart homes, where the market is vexed by the lack of a single standard or system for devices to speak to each other. More than 200 technology companies from 15 countries around the world are showcasing their consumer technology innovations at CES Asia which takes place from May 25 to 27.
It’s worth bearing in mind that CES is first and foremost a venue for promoting the tech industry – at least the non-Google/Apple/Amazon/Microsoft part of it. Sometimes the promotion falls flat; 3-D screen technology unveiled at CES in 2010 went from the next big thing to a mostly unused feature.
CES will, of course, have its share of colorful creations including a Haier moving refrigerator created to resemble the beloved R2-D2 of blockbuster “Star Wars” film fame.
There might be some surprises, but it’s safe to say that this year TV makers will mainly be presenting Ultra-HD (4K/UHD) High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays.
The world’s biggest consumer technology show runs this week in Las Vegas.
According to The Verge, advancements in automotive technology are expected to be shown and emphasized by this year’s CES, which occurs between January 6 and 9.
“It should appear a little less dense”, said Gary Shapiro, longtime president and chief executive of the Consumer Technology Association.
