Champions League: Atletico Madrid beat Leicester 1-0 in first leg
It will not be logical if Leicester beat Atletico.
His movement is exceptional, and Leicester were unable to shackle him during a draining 90 minutes that saw them struggle to test Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak with anything likely to trouble the Slovenia No. 1. “We take with us an important triumph”. “[But] we expect a fantastic night of football, with an English atmosphere, the fans on top of the pitch”.
Leicester failed to register a shot on target during the 90 minutes, with boss Craig Shakespeare bringing on Andy King to bolster his midfield and contain Griezmann’s threat at the break.
They have every right to feel aggrieved too, as Antoine Griezmann’s decisive 28th minute penalty was given in error – Marc Albrighton’s challenge was clearly outside of the box. “We are aware of what we need to do for the second leg”. The sprightly attacker had been hauled down by Marc Albrighton after Danny Simpson was caught out of position, though, it appeared that the contact took place outside the area.
“We know what it’s about”, Shakespeare said. “It’s a definite foul, but it’s outside the box”.
Leicester stayed tightly locked on defense even after conceding the goal, making sure it headed back to England with a chance.
“We wished for more time not only to process things but also to be able to play in our best form for our Champions League dream”.
Similar to the last 16 first leg against Sevilla, Leicester were pinned back by their Spanish hosts as Atletico marauded forward with growing menace.
The hosts, as expected, were dominant from the start and had their first effort on goal in the fourth minute when Fernando Torres was played in by Griezmann, but the Spain striker shot tamely at Foxes keeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Palace go into the game on the back of Monday’s stunning 3-0 defeat of Arsenal, a win that extended their recent run to five victories in six games and moved them six points clear of the relegation zone. “We knew we were playing a team who knew what they were doing and what they wanted”.
DF Robert Huth, 7 – Picked up a yellow card so will miss the second leg but offered vital leadership and steel in the heart of defence.
Another fan, who said there were “about five or six big bangs”, added: “On the whole it was okay, but we did scarper out quite quickly earlier on when the police made a decision to throw rubber bullets at us”.
It leaves the tie delicately poised ahead of the second leg on Tuesday at the King Power Stadium. “Wes is taking more time than he thought and we thought”.
Simeone says Atletico were not clinical enough despite having the majority of the possession, and admits he wanted a bigger result.
