Champions League round-up: Ajax knocked out at qualifying stage
Ajax will look to move a step closer to the UEFA Champions League group stages when they face Rapid Vienna is the third round qualifier second-leg on Tuesday.
Ajax were down 0-2 at the end of the first half and managed to claw back to 2-2 before being sunk by the victor with 13 minutes left to play. Arek Milik volleyed home a cross by Mitchell Dijks in the 52nd minute and fifteen minutes from time it was substitute Nemanja Gudelj to make it 2-2.
But two minutes later Schaub grabbed his second for Vienna, putting them through to the final qualifying play-off round.
New signing Ivan Cavaleiro opened the scoring with a fine, bending shot from a tight angle, before further goals followed from Layvin Kurzawa, Anthony Martial and another new signing, Stephan El Shaarawy.
Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb progressed on away goals despite squandering a three-goal lead at Molde.
Etzaz Hussain and Mohamed Elyounoussi scored either side of the interval for the Norwegians, who then had Vegard Forren sent off before Ola Kamara levelled to set up a dramatic finale.
APOEL, meanwhile, lost 1-0 at home to FC Midtjylland in a tie that finished 2-2 on aggregate and saw the Cypriots go through to the playoffs on the strength of the two away goals in the first leg.
Viktor Fischer has been named in Ajax’s starting lineup for the second leg of their Champions League third-round qualifier at home to Rapid Vienna.
