Chance the Rapper references Laquan McDonald case in ‘SNL’ debut
“While the Mayor was speaking about community and respect and responsibility, he had lawyers in federal court blocking another video”, Bishop Tavis Grant told The Chicago Sun-Times, referring to Emanuel’s Wednesday speech at City Council. A Cook County judge ordered the release of it on November 24.
Emanuel has taken steps to reform the police, including setting up a task force to review accountability and a nationwide search for a new police superintendent.
The family of Laquan McDonald is calling for President Barack Obama to hold a White House summit on police brutality. Protesters have turned the shooting into a rallying cry, their chants of “16 shots and a cover-up” taking its place alongside the “I can’t breathe” refrain that followed the video that showed Eric Garner being taken down by a NY police officer in a fatal chokehold.
“She has lost the trust of the people”, Hunter said. Officers who saw Van Dyke shoot McDonald portrayed the teen as menacing, which is not how he appeared on screen. He later added he wished people would recognize that “dreads don’t mean terrible”.

Emauel has come under fire, with protesters demanding his resignation, over his handling of the McDonald case. They’re also circulating a petition of “no confidence” in Emanuel. He’s reported on the Chicago police department for years; he unearthed McDonald’s autopsy and has continued to pursue the story. The poll also found a majority of voters wanting to choose someone besides Alvarez.
“I’m very confident that a Carson justice department could effect change”, he said. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice opens a sweeping probe of Chicago Police Department patterns and practices going back decades.
Laquan McDonald was shot in October 2014 by police Officer Jason Van Dyke, who is charged with first-degree murder. The city sought to suppress the video for over a year before a judge forced Chicago to release it to the public last month. He fired the police chief and named a new head of the agency that investigates police conduct.
