Changing Weather Could Bring Trouble with Texas Wildfires
The fire has been moving in northern and northwestern directions due to influences in wind, topography and heavy vegetation in the area, Time Warner Cable News reported.
The Texas A&M Forest Service estimated Wednesday that the fire was about 50 percent contained. Conditions have been more favorable Wednesday, although humidity is not as high as officials would like. Bastrop OEM said Tuesday evening that Hill’s Prairie Livestock Auction on Highway 304 is also open for large animals needing evacuation.
Buescher State Park and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Science Park were voluntarily evacuated. Fire retardant was dropped from an aircraft, which ultimately helped save the hospital. He said resources they’ve invested in have saved the community a lot of heartache and money in keeping fires from spreading.
Bastrop County has been engulfed in flames in the past. Currently, 14 people have been placed in a shelter, according to officials.
Two other fires in the area have been completely contained. One structure, not a home, was reported to have been destroyed by the fire.
Mike Fischer, EM Coordinator for Bastrop County, said it will be days before the fire comes to an end.
News 3 goes inside the Texas A&M Forest Service headquarters for an update on the wildfire weather danger. Several fire units remained on the scene at the fire burned itself out.
The fire was originally named the Luecke Fire.
