Channing Tatum Might Have Dropped Out of ‘Gambit’
One of the possible reasons behind this move might be Tatum’s “larger ambitions”, since he and his producing partner Reid Carolin have plans to make their directorial debut soon.
The site says that Fox studios has been searching for an actress to co-star opposite Tatum, but now it looks like they’ll have to search for a new actor. Gambit’s appearance in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, there played by Taylor Kitsch, was largely seen as a launchpad for the character, but the bad reception to the film likely killed a spin-off at the time.
Channing Tatum, who’s signed on to play the Ragin’ Cajun and one-time X-Men member, is allegedly suffering from a bout of cold feet.
There are strong rumours this morning that the planned Gambit movie may be in jeopardy, with reports that Channing Tatum is set to quit the project.
Gambit is slated for a October 7th, 2016 release.
Tatum’s involvement contributed greatly towards the film being made and if he does abandon the title, it leaves the fate of it a little uncertain.
“Gambit” has long been a passion project for Tatum, whose attachment encouraged 20th Century Fox to ramp up production.
The film’s budget is estimated at just under $150 million, which is admittedly a bit high for an unproven spinoff character.
TheWrap is speculating that Tatum’s desire to work behind the camera as a director may have factored into his decision in exiting the project.
20th Century Fox and the actor have not released any statement yet regarding the issue. However, should he leave, Fox must find someone to act as his replacement before the start date or risk putting the movie on hiatus until they get everything in order. No matter the decision, Donner and Simon Kinberg will stay on as producers.
