Chapel Hill mom of critically injured baby speaks about shooter
A 1-year-old girl is fighting for her life after someone shot into an apartment complex on Christmas Day.
Police say in a release that someone fired from a vehicle as it left the complex about 5:45 p.m. Friday.
A 1-year-old girl hit in the head by gunfire on Christmas has passed away according to family members.
The Town of Chapel Hill housing and police departments plan to co-host a community meeting later this week to support the victims of the tragedy.
Shaquille Oneill Davis, 22, made his first court appearance Monday on charges of attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. The emotional and desperate plea for justice came from Tylena Williams and her family outside UNC Children’s Hospital. No other children were injured in the shooting.
After the shooting, Pam Hemminger, the city’s newly-elected mayor, called for legislative action to reduce gun violence.
Hemminger also praised the efforts of law enforcement for quickly apprehending the suspect.
The child underwent surgery at UNC hospitals.
Outside the courtroom, Davis’ mother said he was innocent, adding that she thought she knew who shot Maleah.
