Chargers offensive line hurting heading into Browns game
What type of defensive looks should we expect to see from the Browns? Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker and Amari Cooper all had big days against the Browns defense. By the fortunate nature of the parody of the National Football League, Cleveland has been given a two-game extension, so-to-speak, on their “soft schedule” by virtue of injuries. That’s been our No. 1 focus.
So, what do the Chargers do offensively with a banged up line? The Chargers opened the season with a win over Detroit and lost by five points to Cincinnati. While that was largely because they were playing from behind all afternoon, the Browns offense must be able to run the ball in order to succeed, something they’ve had mixed results doing so far this year. Stopping rookie RB Melvin Gordon is going to be challenging but their defense has the talent to limit any success he could have. After his departure, the run blocking completely fell apart for the rest of the season. “We really will. We’ve got to go out and find a way to get win number two”. Their starting left tackle, left guard and center are expected to be out with injuries. Our tight ends have allowed too many defenders to penetrate into the backfield.
And if they can’t take care of business this week, they have Pittsburgh a week from Monday night at home (albeit with Michael Vick likely standing in for Ben Roethlisberger), Green Bay on the road the following week, and the suddenly resurgent Raiders the week after that. He gets out of his breaks good.
The TMZ.com story that reputed three unidentified offensive starters want Johnny Manziel to start ahead of McCown merely added to the challenge McCown faces on Sunday. The Chargers’ early play has taken a few attention away from the LA threat, but not in a good way.
First down: Is the leash shortening on Josh McCown? However, it’s not out of the realm that Johnny Manziel sees a snap during the first half just to throw another wrinkle at the Chargers’ defense, or to set something up for the second half if Cleveland is still within a possession. That is because Cleveland had considered taking Gordon during the first round.
Benjamin suffered a slight injury to his ribs but this should not keep him out for week 4.
“I had great preparation this week”, Bowe said. They have been allowing a ton of yards on the ground at this point in the season. Together, they combined to go 10-of-31 on third downs, and neither unit made it to the red zone.
“I don’t believe in those unless you are truly going to be eliminated”, Rivers said.
The Cleveland Browns have dealt with a lot of talk in terms of living up to expectations, particularly in the secondary and along the offensive line, but that is nothing compared to the talk surrounding the San Diego Chargers. He’s listed as questionable and was a full participant in Friday’s practice. Browns head coach Mike Pettine did weigh in on the decision.
