Chargers or Raiders to move out of AFC West?
Representatives from the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers met with Los Angeles business leaders on Monday to discuss new developments on a plan for an NFL stadium in Carson.
Appearing before the Los Angeles sports council, Policy slathered on the praise for the $1.7 billion Carson Stadium Project.
The assumption should be that either the Raiders or Chargers would shift to the NFC West. I believe the Raiders should join the NFC West, and the Arizona Cardinals should join the AFC West. It just seems like a good fit for both teams.
Both the Chargers and the Raiders are playing in the AFC West and are bitter rivals.
A poll, he said, found nearly a quarter of the Chargers’ and Raiders’ fan bases are located in greater Los Angeles.
The tower proposed in previous plans that would simulate lightning bolts or large flames was left off this set of plans.
The owner of the St. Louis Rams, Stan Kroenke has already purchased and begun the process of clearing property near the old Hollywood Park Horse Racing track to build a stadium he hopes for his Rams.
A video tour of the stadium, created by backers and presented to team owners (via SBNation), shows some of the previously unseen features of the planned football venue (overall its swooping design has remained mostly the same aside from the lightning). He said the teams would attract fans from California’s Central Coast to Mexico to a stadium with 12,000 parking spots for tailgating and easy freeway access. Under current rules, the next opportunity for a team to file to relocate would be in January 2016.
At least 24 of 32 teams would need to vote in support of team relocation.
“I guess you could use the metaphor of musical chairs, and there’s a bit of that going on”, Steve Tisch, co-owner of the New York Giants and a longtime L.A. resident, told the Los Angeles Times. Policy predicted there could be a decision by the league early next year.
