Chargers, Raiders, and Rams all file for relocation to LA
The St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders have filed applications to relocate to the Los Angeles area.
We’ve been hearing about a team moving to Los Angeles for several seasons now, mostly rumors and vague threats by owners trying to secure public funding for a new stadium.
Via the Associated Press, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt declined on Sunday to name which team would move from among the Rams, Chargers, and Raiders.
The NFL said the teams filed the “appropriate documentation in support of its application, as required by the NFL Policy and Procedures for Proposed Franchise Relocations”.
The applications will be reviewed this week by league staff and three league committees that will meet in NY on Wednesday and Thursday – the Los Angeles Opportunities, Stadium, and Finance committees.
The Raiders are expected to apply to relocate to the L.A. suburb of Carson this week.
The Chargers, Raiders and St. Louis Rams are worth about $1.5 billion each, making them among the league’s least valuable franchises. The Chargers have sought a new home since 2008, three years after their stadium was expanded to accommodate Super Bowls. In late December, the Bay Area News Group reported that the city of Oakland sent a report to A’s officials that included five potential ballpark sites in and around downtown Oakland. Now one or perhaps all three have to try to win enough votes from the divided National Football League owners to get approval to build a stadium and move. He now is working with the Raiders and San Diego Chargers interest in moving to Carson.
The fee for relocation, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, is going to be roughly $550 million – even for Los Angeles, that’s a pretty penny to be paying up front.
The Rams now have a year-to-year lease with the Edward Jones Dome.
The Rams and Raiders also issued statements.
Kansas City got the ball back on the free kick and got back in sync on offense.
The St. Louis stadium task force said in a statement it had anticipated the filing “for more than a year” and was “extremely confident” its proposal would be “well received as the league weighs its options in the weeks ahead”.
The end result in coach Jack Del Rio’s first season was the same: a 13th straight season without the playoffs. It’s very early in the process for all three teams, and we could just as easily see these teams stay in their locations as we could see them move. “We have to take the approach and with the assumption that everything’s taking place here in St. Louis until we’re told otherwise”.
Oakland, who also left Los Angeles in 1995, was third from last, while San Diego was also in the bottom half.
Middle linebacker James Laurinaitis said the demands of the season kept it from being too big of a distraction. The Chiefs come at you from every angle on defense, and they’re hard to stop on every play. “Everyone wants closure to it all, just wants to know one way or another”. “We’ll all find out at the same time”, Carr said Monday.
