Charles Woodson to retire after 18th season
Quarterback Derek Carr, receiver Amari Cooper and running back Latavius Murray were named as alternates for the January 31 game in Honolulu.
Reece has been the team’s lone selection the past three years.
The Raiders will never be able to replace a player like Woodson. The only player with more is Rod Woodson with 12.
Woodson returned to the Oakland Raiders in 2013 and has been playing with a shoulder injury almost all season after injuring it in the opening game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Amerson plans to soak in these final two weeks with Woodson.
Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie, for his part, will have at least six picks in the top-15 of each round should he decide to draft a replacement to Woodson. The is the third year of the NFL’s conference-free format in which two captains draft the teams, and Rice and Michael Irvin will serve as those captains for a second straight year. He surely will head to Canton once it’s all said and done. He was pulled toward the end of Sunday’s game, but Musgrave said that was because the team liked having J’Marcus Webb back at guard and Khalif Barnes in at tackle as they went to a pass-happy offense trying to comeback. I’ve been waiting on somebody to ask me to do that.
The reason why he decided to make his retirement announcement at this point in time was because he wanted Oakland Raiders fans to watch him in person one final time.
“Making the Pro Bowl is something that I’ve thought about”.
Woodson said that following Oakland’s loss to Detroit back in November that he knew this was going to be his last ride. Those were 18 good years. “There are certain guys you play against who act like they’re the best guy on the field”.
Barring an unlikely change of heart, Woodson should become eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame following the conclusion of the 2020 season. His five interceptions this year have him up to 65 in his career, tying for No. 5 all-time. This will be Reece’s fourth-straight trip to the Pro Bowl. He announced yesterday that this would be his final season as an National Football League player and that, even though he felt like his body could endure another grueling season at the ripe age of 40, the motivation to play was gone.
A 1,000-yard season may have been devalued around the league, but it’s not something that happens very often in Oakland. “We didn’t get a chance to accomplish what we would have liked to this year as a team, but nevertheless, I had a great deal of fun playing and still got a couple games left to still go out and do what I’ve been doing all of my life”.
Reece finished second in fan voting at fullback.
