Charlie’s Angels Is Getting Rebooted, Probably With An Unexpected Director
Marvel has yet to put a woman in charge of one of its films, but that’s not stopping anybody else from stepping into 2015: Sony is in negotiations with Pitch ideal 2 director Elizabeth Banks to handle a reboot of Charlie’s Angels.
“Charlie’s Angels” launched in 1976 on ABC and lasted five seasons with Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith portraying private detectives working for a benefactor named Charlie. There’s no screenplay in place yet, and Sony is reportedly hunting for a writer for the project. It’s also a sign that it could be a “girlier” affair than the originals, seeing as how they showed limited crossover appeal to the action world, despite a big budget and a then-hot McG helming. The updated version starred Lucy Lui, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore as the Angels, with Bill Murray as Boswell. The film earned more than $264 million worldwide, but its 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle was not as well received. However, poor ratings and critical reviews contributed to its inevitable cancellation.
Elizabeth Banks scored a great opening weekend and a tremendous overall success with Pitch ideal 2.
Banks and husband Max Hendelman will also produce. Audiences will next see the actress on screen in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2″, hitting theaters on November. 20. Now Banks is moving forward to her next feature directing gig, and it’s a revival of a name that everyone recognizes.
