Charlie Strong and Texas soundly beaten by TCU, 31-9
The RB finished the season with 2,028 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.
By finishing 6-7 in 2014, 5-7 in 2015 and 5-7 in 2016, Strong’s three-year record at Texas was 16-21 (.432).
Carlton also noted Strong told the team he was looking forward “to coming back” for next season, though he added Saturday will likely be when he meets with Texas president Greg Fenves and athletic director Mike Perrin. It was something Strong stressed during Monday’s news conference when he defended the program’s progress in his three seasons.
Strong’s reported firing hardly is surprising.
A potential bidding war between two power programs over Herman could affect the rest of the coaching landscape throughout college football.
Charlie Strong may have coached his last game with Texas.
Strong’s tenure looked to be over last week following Texas’ 24-21 loss to Kansas and reports of his dismissal came a day later.
Sources said UT intermediaries have also attempted to gauge the interest of Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher, Baltimore Ravens’ coach John Harbaugh and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney.
According to Chip Brown of HornsDigest.com, Texas officials will meet with Strong on Saturday morning where he will be fired. If this team goes on to win big in the next few years it will be built upon the foundation Strong laid in Austin.
“You know, if the decision has been made, it’s been made”, Strong said. Everything is a challenge.
More as we learn it. They’re young – 17, 18 and 19 year-olds – and it affects them. It hurts him more than anyone because how bad he wanted to win that football game. I didn’t read it. We have a game to get ready for against TCU on Friday, and I hope our fans will come out and support our team.
After a 6-7 mark his first year, Strong has gone 5-7 in back-to-back seasons. He didn’t, and the University of Texas is poised to move on quickly.
While he hasn’t brought Texas back like a Jim Harbaugh has brought back MI in just two short years, but the foundation is now there and Strong deserves a chance to see it through.

If this was the curtain call for the Charlie Strong era at Texas, it ended just the way more than half of his other previous did – with a loss. It’s the first time Texas has had three consecutive losing seasons since it had four in a row from 1935-38. Foreman joined Ricky Williams as the second 2,000-yard rusher in Longhorn history on 44-yard run in the third quarter.
Sophomore punter and Ray Guy Award finalist Michael Dickson made his final case to voters with another stellar performance, averaging 48.1 yards over eight kicks and booming a 74-yard punt in the fourth quarter.
